world no 3

On Wednesday, world No. 3 and two-time Grand Slam finalist Vera Zvonareva took a break from her preparations for the BNP Paribas Open at Indian Wells to talk briefly with Busted Racquet.
We discussed late bloomers, graduation and why she doesn't follow any fellow women's players on Twitter.
Busted Racquet: You're at Indian Wells and getting ready to play a second-round match later this week. Have you looked at the draw? Caroline Wozniacki said she hadn't.
Vera Zvonareva: [Laughs] No, I haven't looked at the draw and never do. My coach tells me "you're playing this player" or "you're playing that player." When I come off the court I might say, "oh, who am I playing next." And if I lose, I lose.
BR: This is the first really big tournament since the Australian Open. Are your expectations different when you play a Premier event like this?
Zvonareva: I never have any expectations, I'm just trying to improve myself every day and am trying to do my best every day. I really take it one match at a time and see where it takes me. I never put any pressure on myself and say, "you've got to get to this round and win this tournament." Of course I'm coming to the tournament and want to win the whole thing and I'll do everything to do that.
BR: At 26, you're right in the middle of the top 10 in terms of age. [Kim Clijsters, Sam Stosur, Francesca Schiavone, Li Na and Venus Williams are older, Caroline Wozniacki, Jelena JankovicVictoria Azarenkaand Ageniszka Radwasnka are younger.] That seems to be skewing a bit older than usual. To what do you attribute this shift?
Zvonareva: Everyone lifted their physical condition, so the sport is quite physical. Everyone is at a high level in that way. But you have to have that experience on top of that. Before some players weren't as physical as others, so younger players were coming in and working on their fitness. Maybe they were overpowering the other players. Now everybody has power so it comes down to experience and maturity.
BR: You've peaked at a later age than many. Why do you think that is?
Zvonareva: I think I'm much more mature than I was before. Everyone has their own path. I was always late with everything, I was never so good at 14 -- I mean I was OK, but I was never the best. And then in the last year of 18s I really picked it up. For me, it always takes a long time to reach potential. Some players reach it when they're very young. Then a lot of them retire earlier as well. You can't really predict.
BR: In almost every single interview you're asked the same two things. So which topic are you most sick of hearing questions about: your emotions or going to school.
Zvonareva: [Laughs] Probably, my emotions, I guess. I don't know, people saw me getting upset in two matches andthey still talk about it five years later. You look at other players, everyone got upset in a few matches throughout their career. It's normal. Emotions are a part of the game. If you're not emotional when you do any kind of sport, it's not worth doing it. Fans have emotions, they cheer. Players have emotions and it's very good for the sport.
BR: School it is. How much longer do you have? This is your last year?
Zvonareva: Yes, this is my last year. I'm working on my thesis so hopefully I can graduate.
BR: I went to school with a guy who was the fifth lead in a sitcom [Minkus from "Boy Meets World," because I know you were curious] and was always amazed at how people still whispered around him every time he was around. You're infinitely more famous than him. When you're at school do you find yourself getting that treatment or are you a regular student?
Zvonareva: I'm just a regular student and there is no difference to what I do once I leave school. It's good because, for me, the most important thing is to try and get some knowledge and to know things outside the tennis court that contributes to my life after the sport. I'm trying to develop myself not only as a tennis player but as a person. Study is important for everyone. Nothing is different, I have to do all the tests and sit in the class. I feel like I'm not a tennis player when I'm out there and just a regular student and I enjoy that life.
BR: You follow 16 people on Twitter. Andy Roddick, Ashton Kutcher, Barack Obama among them. You also follow a fake Rafael Nadal. At least I assume he's fake because he spelled his uncle's name wrong.
Zvonareva: Yeah, I think he's a fake one, so I have to unfollow him. But it's fine.
BR: You also don't follow any women's players. Any reason?
Zvonareva: No, no reason. When I signed up for Twitter I did it as something to share about me throughout the day, between the tournaments to get in touch with my fans. I didn't really sign up to follow someone because I don't want to spend all day on my phone following somebody. If I want to talk to other players, I text them.
BR: I hear you. You're not missing much. You list your favorite bands as Rihanna, Pink, Nickelback, Linkin Park and Avril Lavigne. Are there no good bands in Russia?
Zvonareva: There are good bands in Russia and I like a few, but I mostly listen to those bands that you mentioned. [She chuckled after this, but I couldn't tell if it's because she enjoyed the question, was annoyed by the question or because she's embarrassed to admit to liking Nickelback. My guess is B and C.]
BR: Final question: This is going on the Yahoo! Sports blog Busted Racquet. We spell it with a "q" but "k" is also fashionable. How do you like your racquet?
Zvonareva: With a "q."
BR: You're the third person in a row to answer that [Andre Agassi and Caroline Wozniacki were the others]. I don't know if you all are just humoring me, but I appreciate it nonetheless. Thank you and good luck at Indian Wells.
Zvonareva: [Laughs] Thanks

PREDIKSI BNP PARIBAS OPEN

By Mark Lamport-Stokes
INDIAN WELLS, California, March 8 (Reuters) - In-form Novak Djokovic, who has won two titles this year including the Australian Open, could replace Roger Federer as world number two after the Indian Wells tournament starting this week.
The third-ranked Serb is scheduled to meet Federer in the semi-finals at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden and would surpass the Swiss in the global rankings should he win that encounter
For Djokovic, though, the rankings will take care of themselves. He is much more concerned with staying fit and maintaining his superb early-season form.
“I want to take one tournament at a time,” the 23-year-old told reporters in the build-up to the first Masters Series event of the year. “I’ve been talking about my goals too many times in the past years and right now I just want to be playing consistently well.
“I want to keep up the good form that I have, stay fit and just take care of my health and my physical condition.
“I’ve done it really well in the last two months … I know that if I feel and play this way, I have a good chance to stay in the top three,” added the Serb, who reached a career-high second in the rankings in February last year.
Djokovic has been the dominant figure in the men’s game this year, crushing Andy Murray 6-4 6-2 6-3 to claim his second Australian Open title in late January and then outplaying Federer 6-3 6-3 to win last month’s Dubai championships.
Helped by a much improved serve, the Serb has signalled he is a genuine third force at the top of men’s tennis—along with Federer and world number one Rafa Nadal.
SIGNIFICANT FACTORS
Federer, however, believes that fourth-ranked Swede Robin Soderling and Britain’s Murray (fifth) are also significant factors at the game’s summit.
“The top-five players have played really well the last six months,” Federer, a three-times champion at Indian Wells, said after losing the Dubai championships final to Djokovic.
“Someone always has to win one tournament. At the end of the day, we’ve been able to share those a little bit to be honest. So I don’t feel it’s a three-horse race right now.
“Rafa still is the favourite. He’s won three of the four slams. Novak has not lost a match yet this season, but the season is still really short. I’ve been playing well. Murray has been playing well. Soderling hasn’t been playing bad.”
Soderling has won three ATP tournaments this season, more than anyone else, and is seeded to meet Nadal in the semi-finals at Indian Wells.
Spaniard Nadal will be bidding for a third title at the imposing, state-of-the-art Indian Wells venue, having previously triumphed here in 2007 and 2009.
Among the leading contenders in the women’s competition, starting on Wednesday, are holder Jelena Jankovicof Serbia, Denmark’s world number one Caroline Wozniacki and second-ranked Belgian Kim Clijsters.

prediksi ku:
mungkin di men bisa Rafael Nadal, karena udah tampil bagus after took a break a month ago, klo di women bisa jadi si Caro Wozniacki semakin matang season ini.

nadal beats federer on oregon exibition

EUGENE, Oregon (AP)—Rafael Nadal beat Roger Federer 7-5 in an exhibition match Tuesday to warm up for the upcoming BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells, California.

Joining Nadal, the No. 1 player in the world, and Federer, who is No. 2, at the Clash of the Champions wereMaria Sharapova and Victoria Azarenka, who also played a match at the University of Oregon’s new $227 million basketball arena. All are Nike-sponsored athletes.
The foursome then played a set of mixed doubles.

“We’ve had many big battles over the years and also had some wonderful moments in exhibition play,” Federer said of his many matches against Nadal. “We’ve played in some amazing places and this is obviously very special doing it for Nike in a place that means a lot to Phil. We’re very happy to be here tonight.”The Matthew Knight Arena was built with the financial backing of Nike co-founder and University of Oregon Ducks supporter Phil Knight.

John McEnroe was a surprise guest at the event.
Knight contributed $100 million to establish the University of Oregon Legacy Fund, which the school used to back the state bonds it needed to pay for construction of the arena, named after Knight’s son who died in a scuba diving accident in El Salvador in 2004 at age 34.
Tickets for the event sold out in an hour the day they went on sale and Tuesday, 12,220 packed the arena and gave the players a rock star’s welcome as they entered the arena floor under a spot light and to deafening applause.
“Walking down those stairs and hearing the crowd, you would think it is normal but it is not normal for us,” said Federer, 29, who has 16 grand slam singles titles.
The crowd was given a surprise in return when McEnroe appeared to randomly walk out of a tunnel onto the court during pregame introductions.
McEnroe took over the umpire’s chair for the mixed doubles match, with former Oregon quarterbacks Joey Harrington and Dennis Dixon as guest sideline judges.
“I never thought I’d stoop this low,” said McEnroe, who had many infamous disputes with chair umps throughout his storied career.
With Sharapova and Federer leading 5-3, McEnroe and Federer switched places and McEnroe joined Sharapova on the court and thrilled the crowd with some of his old magic, getting the team to match point before Federer came back to polish off a 6-3 victory with an ace.
Azarenka and Sharapova opened the night with an entertaining singles set that featured plenty of banter with courtside fans and each other before Azarenka won 5-4 (5-0) in a tiebreaker.
In the men’s singles set, Nadal and Federer showed little of the intensity that typically when the two meet. Instead, they playfully worked their way through the set with trick shots and amusing commentary before Nadal won.
Serena Williams was originally scheduled to play in the exhibition but had to withdraw because of injury. She was replaced by Azarenka.
Williams, a 13-time Grand Slam champion, hasn’t played an official match since winning Wimbledon last July because of a foot injury she sustained off the court. She had a further setback when she was diagnosed recently with a pulmonary embolism, a blood clot in her lungs. She also needed emergency treatment for a hematoma last week.

breaking news about serena williams

NEW YORK (AP)—Serena Williams says it was “the scariest moment in my life” when blood clots were recently discovered in her lungs.

The 13-time Grand Slam champion said Wednesday she hopes to return this summer after recovering from a recent pulmonary embolism followed by a hematoma.
Williams says she hasn’t left her Los Angles house much since going to the hospital on Feb. 18 when she said she “couldn’t breathe.”
Williams says she had a CAT scan of her lungs and they “found several blood clots.” Her treatment involved self-injecting blood thinners. As a result, she developed a hematoma in her stomach that grew to the size of “a grapefruit” and was surgically removed.
Her absence could stretch to almost a year since winning Wimbledon in July.

CAROLINE WOZNIACKI

Caroline Wozniacki is in Los Angeles preparing to play at the BNP Paribas Open at Indian Wells starting this week. On Monday night, Busted Racquet spoke to the world No. 1 about her changing media image, visiting Serena Williams, Twitter flirting and why tennis players seem to love The Cheesecake Factory so much.

Busted Racquet: I'm feeling a little pressure talking to you after your bravura press conference performance at the Australian Open. Have you found that the members of the press have stepped up their game in asking you questions since then?
Caroline Wozniacki: [Laughs] Yeah, I actually think they're thinking a little more about the questions now and they find more entertaining and more fun as well.
BR: What's the worst question you found yourself getting asked? And please don't say this one.
Wozniacki: [Laughs] I don't know, I always get the question "how do you feel after the game today?" and, of course, if you're winning you feel great and if you lose you don't feel good. I think that's a pretty obvious question.
BR: I've always wondered what there is to say after winning a first-round match two and two. How much can you possible come up with?
Wozniacki: Exactly. It's pretty difficult to answer different ways all the time, especially if you get the same questions. It's just fun to mix it up and to make the journalists think a little more as well.
BR: After the first press conference at the Australian Open, you had another where you made up a kangaroo story. A few hours later you had to come back and apologize for that because many journalists believed you. Were you more sorry that you played the joke or that some gullible folks didn't get that it was a joke?
Wozniacki: I was more sorry that they didn't realize it was a joke because then they had to go back and take their articles back. I actually wasn't sorry that I played the joke because I thought it was kind of funny but I had to go back to the people who actually believed the story and tell them there was no kangaroo.
BR: In a span of three days the perception of you changed. People had called you boring before and then all of a sudden people were saying it was one of the funniest press conferences they could remember.
Wozniacki: I think that's my personality, to have a good laugh and not to take myself too seriously. And of course I have my things on the court but when I'm off the court I just like to have fun. That showed in those press conferences.
BR: Speaking of off the court, you went and went to see Serena Williams at her house today?
Wozniacki: I did. I just wanted to see how she's doing. She's a good friend of mine and of course when I heard the news I was a bit afraid so I wanted to stop by and see how she was doing. And I'm in Los Angeles.
BR: And she is doing well?
Wozniacki: She's doing well. She's keeping her head high and of course she's strong, not only on the court but off as well. She has a strong personality and she'll be fine.
BR: You're appearing in the upcoming video game, Top Spin 4. There's a lot of players in there, including the old school Agassi with the mullet and neon. If you had to pick one player to play with, who would it be?

Wozniacki: I think it'd probably be pretty cool to play asMichael Chang. I remember the match where he was cramping up and he managed to pull through for the win.
BR: I'm one of your 91,000 followers on Twitter and see that last night you dined at The Cheesecake Factory with Agnieska Radwanska. Tennis players seem to love thatplace. Can you shed some light on this?
Wozniacki: I love The Cheesecake Factory, especially the chicken marsala. I almost always pick that dish, it tastes unblievable.
BR: But why is it so popular?
Wozniacki: It's big portions, good food and they have everything. The menu is so big.
BR: I'm going to run a disclaimer that this line of questioning wasn't paid for by The Cheesecake Factory.
Wozniacki: [Laughs]
(This line of questioning was not paid for by The Cheesecake Factory. I was just really curious and happened to eat there the same night. -- CC)
BR: Another Twitter question. Many have noticed that you seem to have a very playful relationship with oneJohn Isner. When I asked some of my followers what I should ask you they said "ask her about Isner." So, here's my question about your Twitter-ship with John Isner.
Wozniacki: [Laughs] John is a very good friend of mine and we've known each other for so many years. We have the same agent, so we know each other very well and I just like to tease him a little bit because he just thinks that he's too big-time and he needs to get his feet on the ground a little bit [laughs].
BR: Do you watch much men's tennis when you're at tournaments with the men or on television when you're not?
Wozniacki: Yeah, I like to watch the men play. I like the way that they're playing and I can always learn something from them. They're playing differently than the woman so I like to learn from them as well.
BR: Speaking of play, you're in California for Indian Wells. The draw came out today. You say you don't ever look at the draws. Really?
Wozniacki: To be honest, I haven't looked at the draw. I actually don't even know who I'm going to play. I know I have a bye in the first round.
BR: I can see how you can avoid hearing who you're playing in a second-round match at Indian Wells. I won't spoil the surprise for you. But at a Grand Slam can you get to the second or third round and not hear the chatter about who you're going to play?
Wozniacki: It depends. Sometimes when you get to the press conferences you hear you're going to play this person in the semifinals and in the quarters you're going to play her. And I'm like, "hold on a second." First of all, you have to make it there. Second, your opponent needs to make it there. It looks easier on paper than it is in real life. There are so many tough opponents out there and tough competitors so I've never liked to look ahead. There are always some surprises in the draw when people are playing pretty well.
BR: Earlier this year you fell from No. 1 in the rankings for one week. You mentioned that it was sort of nice not to hear the questions about being No. 1. That only lasted a few days though and then you were back at the top. Was it nicer for those seven days or for the days since?
Wozniacki: I really like being No. 1 and that's a great achievement. It's something I've always worked for. To be honest, I don't know. The second time I became No. 1, even though it was only for one week that I didn't have it, the media don't ask me any more about deserving it. I think they got tired of asking that question, so it's nice to be back there.
BR: Have to ask; we spell racquet with a "Q" here at Busted Racquet. How do you like your racquet. With a "Q" or with a "K"?
Wozniacki: With a "Q."
BR: That's what I like to hear. Thanks and good luck at Indian Wells.
Wozniacki: [Laughs] Thanks.
