Busted Racquet previews the 2011 WTA Championships

Busted Racquet previews the 2011 WTA ChampionshipsThe 2011 WTA Championships begin Tuesday in Istanbul. Busted Racquet ranks the chances for each of the eight women in the field, from least likely to win, to most likely.
8. Li Na (No. 5 seed) -- Just 5-7 since winning the French Open, Li Na could have used some good luck in her round robin placement. Instead, she's on the same side as tournament heavies Maria SharapovaVictoria Azarenka and Sam Stosur. A winless trip to Istanbul could be in the cards.
7. Vera Zvonareva (No. 6 seed) -- The Russian is always good and rarely great and her 2011 has been no exception. With the exception of Li Na, it wouldn't be a surprise to see any of the seven women advance to the finals in Istanbul. Given Zvonareva's inconsistent play of late and her three consecutive straight-set losses toAgnieszka Radwanska, who's in her round robin, Vera could be one of the ones departing Istanbul early.
6. Agnieszka Radwanska (No. 8 seed) -- Radwanska played her way into the championships with two straight tournament wins in Tokyo and Beijing. (Then she lost to Lucie Safrova in Moscow and needed help to get in, but that's another story.) Did the effort to get in tire her our or will she continue her run?
5. Sam Stosur (No. 7 seed) -- The U.S. Open champion would be one spot higher on this list, if not for one crucial stat: A 0-9 lifetime record against Maria Sharapova. The Russian has head-to-head leads on every woman in the field with the exception of her Wimbledon vanquisher Petra Kvitova, but her dominance is especially pronounced over Stosur. Since they're in the same round robin, the (slight) edge has to go to Maria.
4. Maria Sharapova (No. 2 seed) -- If her foot is healthy (she's played one tournament since the U.S. Open and had to retire with an ankle injury) and if her serve can hold up to five difficult matches in a row and if her conditioning hasn't slipped since her grand summer run and if she can get out of her difficult round robin and if her serve is on (did I mention that already?) then Sharapova is the tournament favorite. But those are a lot of ifs.
Busted Racquet previews the 2011 WTA Championships3. Caroline Wozniacki (No. 1 seed) -- There's still a chance Wozniacki could be passed by Sharapova in the year-end rankings if Sharapova wins the tournament. Given the varied rankings point awarded for round-robin wins, it wouldn't happen unless Sharapova went undefeated in the early rounds and Wozniacki failed to make a final (or in a number of other scenarios, each of which depends on Wozniacki flaming out early) but it's possible. If she holds on, Wozniacki would end the year at No. 1 for the second time in her career, tying Monica Seles and Serena Williams on the all-time list.
2. Petra Kvitova (No. 3 seed) -- She hasn't played great since winning Wimbledon but won in Linz and played a tight first set with Vera Zvonareva in Tokyo. With her easy draw, look for her to be a finalist.
1. Victoria Azarenka (No. 4 seed) -- What better way to cap the wild year of women's tennis, one that saw four different Grand Slam champions, than by having an unpredictable winner at the year-end championships. Azarenka hasn't performed well in her two other WTA Championships appearances, winning just two round robin matches combined. In a deep, but not top-heavy field, we say she corrects course to earn the $1.7 million payday.
Whoever wins, we're guaranteed to see the fifth different winner in the past five years. None of the previous five champions (Justine HeninVenus Williams, Serena Williams and Kim Clijsters) are in the field.

Murray, Nadal say players’ meeting not imminent

SHANGHAI (AP)—Just weeks after raising the possibility of a strike in protest of the crowded tennis calendar,Andy Murray and Rafael Nadal acknowledged Tuesday that bringing the top players together to formulate a plan might be difficult.
Last month, Murray said a meeting might take place during this week’s Shanghai Masters, but the withdrawals of Roger Federer and top-ranked Novak Djokovic from the tournament made that unlikely.
Murray said Tuesday that co-ordinating players’ schedules wasn’t easy.

Second-ranked Nadal said the timing wasn’t right to have a discussion about a possible next step.
“Whether it happens or not, it’s quite a tough thing to do because there’s a lot of players to coordinate and sometimes guys don’t go to the same tournaments,” Murray said. “Tennis players aren’t always the easiest people to get hold of when they’re not at tournaments.”
“There is something there, but is not the right moment to talk about it,” he said Tuesday. “Always is better talk about the things when you know exactly what’s going to happen and when you know exactly what we are going to do.”
Murray, Nadal and Andy Roddick have been among the most vocal in urging changes to the packed tennis calendar and the number of events the top players are required to enter each year.
Last November, the ATP decided to extend the tennis offseason from five to seven weeks in response to years of complaints from players about the length of the season and the toll it takes on their bodies.
But other issues came to a head during the rain-soaked U.S. Open, when Nadal, Murray and Roddick voiced concerns about the conditions of the courts and the schedule that forced Nadal to play three matches in three days.
Since then, Roddick has pushed for the creation of a players’ union similar to those in other major pro sports that could act on players’ behalf in negotiations with ATP officials.
After his second-round win on Tuesday, Roddick said that Federer and Djokovic need to be involved in any discussion that takes place, but he also expected it would happen before year’s end.
“You know, at this point I think the main thing is a voice. Whether one’s playing the schedule, we should have something to say about it. At a certain point, how long is too long of not getting that point across?” he said. “It needs to be more than conversation and more than talk. We’ll see if the time is now.”
Murray was quoted by the BBC last month saying that a strike was a “possibility,” but he appeared to be in more reconciliatory mood on Tuesday when he said that neither he nor any of the players he had spoken to wanted that outcome.
“It’s so far away from being at that level. The players haven’t even sat down and spoke,” he said.
Murray also stressed that the players only wanted a minimal change to the calendar.
“It’s just a matter of one or two less mandatory events during the year. That’s it,” Murray said. “Doesn’t really need to be a huge change in the calendar or huge change within tennis or the rankings or anything like that.
“It’s just very small things that seem so difficult to get done. I think sometimes the players find it difficult to understand why that is.”

Berdych, Radwanska win China Open titles

BEIJING (AP)—Tomas Berdych beat Marin Cilic 3-6, 6-4, 6-1 to win the China Open on Sunday, andAgnieszka Radwanska topped Andrea Petkovic, 7-5, 0-6, 6-4 to claim the women’s title, her second in as many weeks.
The victory lifted Berdych past Jo-Wilfried Tsonga to No. 7 in the world standings and gave the Czech valuable points toward the season-ending ATP World Tour Finals.
It was the third-seeded Berdych’s first finals appearance this season after losing in six semifinals, and his first title since Munich in 2009.
“To bring this title really means a lot to me. After 29 months, it’s been quite a long time, so I’m happy that I could break this up,” said Berdych, whose best performance to date came in the 2010 Wimbledon final that he lost toRafael Nadal.
Cilic served out the first set emphatically with an ace, but Berdych raced to a 3-0 lead in the second. While Cilic rallied to keep it close, Berdych broke him at 5-4 to win the set and turned the match for good in the third game of the third set.
“I had a pretty good start to the second set. I made a break and at that moment I started to feel, that’s the chance, I can do it well,” Berdych said.
Cilic, of Croatia, seemed firmly in command in the first set, making few mistakes and serving strongly. Berdych held on, however, eventually wearing him down and taking all four of the final games.
“I’m feeling a little disappointed by the loss today,” said Cilic, who missed out on a crucial chance to break Berdych at the end of the second set.
“I didn’t give up. A few points decided the second set … then the third set went the way it did,” he said.
In the women’s final, 11th-seeded Radwanska recovered after failing to win a single game in the second set in a match lasting more than 2 1/2 hours.
“I tried to focus on my game, playing a bit more aggressively,” the Pole said.
The two broke each other’s serves repeatedly over lengthy rallies before Radwanska finally pulled ahead 5-4 in the decider and served out for the win after the ninth-seeded Petkovic saved the first match point.
“We played unbelievable today. I really just better by a couple of points. I think it was the best final I’ve played,” Radwanska said.
Radwanska’s third title of the year came on the heels of her victory in the Pan Pacific Open in Tokyo on Oct. 1.
Radwanska, who lost the 2009 final in Beijing to Svetlana Kuznetsova, is 5-0 against Petkovic.
“We always play very long rallies and we always play good matches. I expected a really tough match,” Petkovic said. “All in all, in two or three days, when the disappointment settles a little bit, I think I’ll be able to look at it as a really great match and really great entertainment for the people.
“I really have to turn around this head-to-head one day, hopefully soon.”

Nadal plots return to top form

World number two Rafael Nadal Tuesday targeted a return to the form that won him three Grand Slams in a single season, admitting his game had dipped since his stellar 2010 campaign.
The Spaniard, for many years locked in a battle with Swiss greatRoger Federer for tennis supremacy, has seen his crown taken this year by Serbia's Novak Djokovic, who has swept all before him and won three Slams of his own.
Nadal, 25, who won the French Open, Wimbledon and US Open back-to-back last year, said his game had since faltered a little, contributing to his losing seven of 10 finals in 2011.
"I believe Rafa 2010 had something more special than Rafa 2011, especially in tough situations," Nadal said ahead of his first match at the Shanghai Masters against compatriot Guillermo Garcia-Lopez on Wednesday.
"Winning or losing depends on very, very, very small things," added Nadal, who retained his French Open crown but finished runner-up to Djokovic at this year's Wimbledon and US Open.
"And probably these very, very small things I did a little bit better in 2010 than 2011. It is hard to win big matches. I lost a lot of finals this year.
He said the only thing on his mind now was to ensure he had "enough motivation to keep trying my best and to keep finding solutions to be a better player for next year".
He disagreed with Andy Murray's assessment that the level of the men’s game had gone up another notch this season, suggesting that he and Federer had not been as good as in previous years.
"I don’t think the level has been better than 2010 or 2009. I think it has been similar," said the Spaniard. "For my part and Roger's part a little bit worse for the moment.
"I played worse than last year. I was very consistent, probably even more consistent than last year, but I played a little bit worse, I think. I think Roger played well, but he lost a few matches that in the past he never would have lost."
Nadal said minor tweaks had made the difference for Djokovic and he would try to do likewise.
"If you are not improving every year more and more, your chances are less," said Nadal. "Don't forget this is my seventh year on the tour being top two.
"That's happened because, first thing, I was in perfect conditions mentally all these years, but second thing because I always try to improve and play better and better. That's the goal and that's what I have to keep doing if I want to keep being here for a long time."

Serena, Clijsters confirm for Brisbane International

Serena Williams could get a chance of revenge against Samantha Stosur on the Australian's home soil after announcing she will start her 2012 season at the Brisbane International.
Queenslander Stosur, who will also play the tournament, won her first Grand Slam in September by beating a fiery Williams 6-2, 6-3 in the US Open final.
Thirteen-time major champion Williams has never played in Brisbane and said she was looking forward to it.
"Well, I never played in Brisbane and I have never been to Brisbane but I have heard great things about it," she said.
"It is brand new for me, so all that is going to be really exciting, and it will help me with my seeding going into the Australian Open too, so that would be good."
Maria Sharapova and Kim Clijsters were also confirmed for Brisbane ahead of the Australian Open later January, the first Grand Slam of the year.
Clijsters, who missed the US Open last month with a stomach muscle injury, won in Brisbane in 2010 and is hungry for another title.
"With Maria (Sharapova), Sam (Stosur) and Serena confirmed for the Brisbane International it is going to be a tough contest but also be a great chance to test your form leading into the first Grand Slam," said the Belgian.
"Having won the Brisbane event in 2010 and then the Australian Open last year I am looking forward to getting back on the court in Australia to defend both my titles.
"Australia has always been a home away from home for me and I am very comfortable there. I am thrilled to be returning in January."
The Brisbane International runs from January 1-8.
